Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) |
You can be forgiven for thinking there’s no course of action to take if you have been involved in an accident where the driver is either not insured, foreign or flees the scene of the accident without there being an opportunity to obtain any contact details.Rest assured all is not lost, as you may be able to make a claim to the Motors Insurers Bureau (MIB). The MIB are a non-profit-making company set up by motor insurers in order to compensate victims of motor accidents and will investigate the claim by:
After their investigation, the MIB will make every effort to decide on whether to make a compensation payment within three months. If liability is in dispute, conflicting evidence is presented, or any person is seriously injured, they will require a police report. This can take some time to obtain as the police cannot release the report until criminal prosecutions are concluded. As such, if you are eligible for compensation, a decision on the appropriate amount will usually take longer than three months. On top of this, there are a variety of other factors that have an effect on how long things take. This could include injury claims for which they an independent medical report may need to be obtained if the medical experts do not agree on the effects of the injury. They may also have to obtain independent reports to establish the extent of some parts of your claim, such as loss of earnings or care needs. |
